FAQ

WHAT IS MORNING SICKNESS?

The term “morning sickness” refers to nausea and vomiting experienced during pregnancy. It is a very common event, with mild to moderate nausea present in 35-91% of pregnancies[1]. Morning sickness generally starts early in pregnancy, peaking by about the 9th week, and in most cases has stopped by week 20[2]. It is differentiated from hyperemesis gravidarum as being less severe, and generally does not require hospitalisation (see next FAQ).
Although morning sickness is common during pregnancy it is advisable to always discuss any issues of nausea and vomiting that you may be having with your midwife or health professional.

WHAT IS HYPEREMESIS GRAVIDARUM?

Affecting approximately 1 in 200 pregnancies, hyperemesis gravidaum is generally a severe vomiting, often requiring hospitalisation to address the potential for rare but serious complications[3]. It may lead to starvation and weight loss, dehydration, and electrolyte and/or liver enzyme abnormalities[1].
Hyperemesis gravidarum is a serious condition, and medical assistance should always be sought to assess the severity of vomiting and allow for treatment and consideration of other causative factors such as gastroenteritis, peptic ulcer, urinary tract infection etc[3].

WHEN SHOULD I SEEK HELP FOR ONGOING NAUSEA & VOMITING?

You should always discuss issues of nausea and vomiting with your midwife or doctor to ensure that no other disorder is the cause of your symptoms. It is essential to recognise that ongoing intractable vomiting may cause serious issues of dehydration and electrolyte imbalance, and it is important to seek help early. Any new products that you intend to use to address this nausea should also be discussed with your health professional to ensure that they are appropriate for you and your pregnancy.
